General Scholarships

Financial awards are available to Ontario students enrolled in approved programs at approved Canadian post-secondary institutions. Applicants are assessed primarily on academic performance. In an effort to learn more about, and to demonstrate an understanding of Ontario’s trucking industry, applicants are asked to write an essay that answers a specific question about trucking.

In addition, students graduating from secondary (high) school are eligible to apply for the J.O. Goodman Award, Bud Bar Award, George P. Ledson Award (university applicants) or the C.V. Hoar Award (college applicants). 

The J.O. Goodman, Bud Barr, George P. Ledson, and C.V. Hoar Awards

Students entering their first year of post-secondary study at an approved university or college are eligible for consideration for the J.O. Goodman Award, The Bud Barr Award, the George P. Ledson Award, or the C.V. Hoar Award. A separate application is not necessary for students applying for either award. However, there are additional requirements, which are detailed in the Scholarship Application Package.

The J.O. Goodman Award

The J.O. Goodman Award consists of a single scholarship for an eligible first-year student enrolled in a full-time recognized program in an accredited university.

The award is named for Mr. J.O. (Joe) Goodman, who for forty-four years was Senior Staff Executive of the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA). His years of service to the development of the trucking industry in Ontario and to the trucking association resulted in his being awarded the Order of Canada in 1978 along with the nickname “Mr. Trucking”. Mr. Goodman was one of the moving forces behind the establishment of the Foundation and was its Executive Director from its beginning until 1978.

The Bud Barr Award

The Bud Barr Award consists of a single scholarship for an eligible first-year student enrolled in a full-time, recognized program in an accredited Canadian university.

The award is named for Mr. William “Bud” Barr, who served as the Foundation’s Executive Director from 1992 to 2005, following his retirement from a long career in the Ontario trucking industry. Prior to managing the Foundation, he served on its board of directors for several terms, during which time he was a strong advocate for the charity. Bud was a fixture in the Ontario trucking industry, and an active member with the Ontario Trucking Association for decades during which time he held nearly every volunteer position that existed. The Bud Barr Award honours the memory of William “Bud” Bar who passed away in 2009.

The George P. Ledson Award

The George P. Ledson Award consists of a single scholarship for an eligible first-year student enrolled in a full-time, recognized program in an accredited Canadian university.

The award is named for Mr. George P. Ledson, in recognition of his long-standing support and service as a director of the OTA Education Foundation, along with his passion, dedication, and outstanding support of the trucking industry and its people. The scholarship was announced in 2015 following George’s resignation from the Foundation’s board after 20 years of service. During his tenure, George helped to oversee the Foundation’s organizational and general scholarship program restructuring, as well as the introduction of endowed scholarships.

The C.V. Hoar Award

The C.V. Hoar Award consists of a single scholarship for an eligible first-year student enrolled in a full-time recognized program in an accredited community college.

The award is named for Mr. C.V. (Charles) Hoar, who is one of the founding members of the OTA Education Foundation and who led the Foundation into its current form when he helped establish the J.O. Goodman Awards in 1979 following the retirement of Mr. Goodman as Senior Staff Executive of the Ontario Trucking Association. Serving as chairman for both the Ontario Trucking Association and the OTA Education Foundation while continuing to operate a successful trucking company, Mr. Hoar was a strong advocate of post-secondary education and recognized its value in a strong and viable trucking industry.
